Building and following your own Routes

The Route Builder tool available from the Tools menu creates routes that snap to existing trails and roads, making it easy to plan where to go and how to get there. Save your routes for later reference and follow them on your next ride.

Note: iPhone and iPad users can build Routes offline as long as they've got an updated Offline Map of the area saved on their device. Learn more about saving Offline Maps.

How to build a Route

To quickly build a route to any location or as close as possible using existing roads and trails, tap a trail, Markup, or anywhere on the map and select Build Route from the bottom row of buttons.

Heads up: Roads and trails without a colored overlay are shown because they exist or did exist at one point based on available data. Their inclusion doesn't constitute legal permission to ride on them and isn't a guarantee that they're maintained or traversable. The fact that a Route can be created isn't verification that the underlying road or trail is currently passable.

To build a Route point by point, open the Tools menu and tap Build Route.

Tap points on the map to build your Route. Each point will snap to the closest road or trail by default.

Tip: If your Route can't snap to a section of road or trail, select Point Draw to manually draw that section. Tap to remove the last saved point.

When you're finished building the route, swipe the menu up, make any desired changes to customize the route's name, color, line type, or line weight, then select Save.

Tip: On the onX Offroad Web Map, you'll find Route Builder in the upper-left corner of your browser window. The steps for building and saving a Route are the same as in the App.

How to follow a Route

Once your Route is saved, you've got two ways to follow it.

Tap the Route on the map and select Driving Directions for turn-by-turn guidance, or simply tap the location button to center the map on your current position and follow along as you move.
